ANSI-CAM — Privacy Policy

ANSI-CAM collects the following categories of data: usage, content. Perfect Ship LLC uses this data only to operate the app.

The conversion itself happens entirely on your device. When you use the camera, the app asks for video only — it never requests audio as part of the camera — and each frame is drawn to a canvas inside the page and handed to a worker running in your own browser, which turns it into a grid of characters and colours. In ordinary use no image, frame, or recording is uploaded anywhere. There is no gallery to post to, no account to save into, and no server that holds your pictures.

There is one narrow exception, and it only involves exporting video. Saving a recording as MP4 is normally encoded inside your browser. On browsers that lack the necessary encoder — older Safari and Firefox — or if that in-browser encode fails, the app offers to finish the job on our server: it sends the converted ANSI frames, meaning the grid of characters and palette colours, not the original camera image, which are encoded into a file and returned to you, and the temporary files are deleted immediately afterwards. This happens only when you press export, only on those browsers, and never during ordinary viewing or recording. Exporting in any other format — PNG, ANS, TXT, HTML, GIF, spritesheet, or a project file — is done entirely in your browser and saved straight to your device.

If something in the app crashes, it sends us the error: the message, the JavaScript stack trace, and a short note of what it was doing at the time. That report carries no image data and nothing you have made. Like any request to any website, it reaches our server with your IP address attached, and we use that only to stop the endpoint being flooded. There is no third-party crash reporting service involved and nothing is forwarded on.

Beyond that, ANSI-CAM runs no analytics, no telemetry, no advertising, and no third-party tracking software. There is no Google Analytics, no Plausible, no PostHog, no Sentry, no Segment. It sets no cookies at all.

Your work is stored on your own device, not on our server. The saved-art library, the autosaved current session, and your animation projects and frames all live in your browser's own storage, and the saved entries include small thumbnail images of the art — which, if you made it with the camera, will be pictures derived from your camera. We cannot see any of it. Clearing your browser's site data for the app deletes all of it, and that is also how you delete it: there is no account for us to erase, because there is no account.

Some optional features fetch reference pictures from other people's services, and those services see your IP address and what you searched for, as they would if you visited them directly. The reference-image gallery searches Wikimedia Commons, the icon gallery searches Iconify, and the emoji sprites are fetched from a public GitHub address. Your search text is sent to those services. Your own image is never sent to any of them, and none of these run unless you open a gallery and search.

The microphone is a separate, optional feature, used only to make visuals that react to sound. It is off until you press the microphone button, the audio is analysed live inside the page to read its loudness and frequencies, and it is never recorded, stored, or transmitted. If you choose to drive the visuals from a browser tab's audio instead, the browser will ask you to pick a tab to share; the app stops the video part of that share immediately and keeps only the sound.

ANSI-CAM asks for no other device permissions — no location, no notifications, no motion sensors, and no contacts. The share button copies a link that contains only your rendering settings, such as the palette and the character mode. It never contains your picture.

ANSI-CAM has no accounts and takes no money. There is no sign-in, no profile, no subscription, no purchase, and no payment processor of any kind behind it.
